The Airman and Family Readiness Center is here to assist you during your transition from the military to civilian life. Effective Nov. 21, 2012, Public Law 101-510, H.R. 2433 and Executive Order 13518 mandates all separating or retiring service members complete newly established components of the Transition Assistance Program (TGPS) in addition to Pre-Separation Counseling, DD Form 2648. It is mandatory that separating/retiring members contact the Airman and Family Readiness Center at 719-567-3920 to ensure requirements are completed, according to established timelines, at least 90 days prior to the member’s separation/retirement date or the member will not be authorized to start PTDY or terminal leave.
**Retirees can attend the mandated workshops 2 year prior to their retirement date; Separatees can attend these mandated workshops 1 year prior to their separation date. Do not wait until orders are cut. Attend these workshops as soon as possible as they must be complete 90 days prior to your separation or retirement date. **
Active Duty members as well as Reservists and Guardsmen are required to attend Pre-Separation Counseling more than 90 days prior to their official separation or retirement date (Public Law 101-510 & DoDI 1332.35).. Attending this briefing does not obligate you to separate or retire however, it is a mandatory pre-requisite for attending the TGPS Seminar. Dependents are welcome to attend.
This monthly four-day seminar provides information on labor market research, civilian credential exploration, resume building, mock interviews, professional introductions, financial management, salary negotiation, social media and more. Military personnel of all branches must attend unless otherwise exempt. Dependents are welcome to attend.
The VA Benefits Briefing will provide information on education benefits, Post 9/11 GI Bill and Montgomery GI Bill, healthcare, compensation, life insurance policies, home loans, vocational rehabilitation, benefit registration, eBenefits, and more. This briefing is mandatory for those separating/retiring from the military as it is part of the mandatory TGPS Workshop. Dependents are welcome to attend.
During the Veteran Affairs Briefing, a representative from the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) at Ft. Carson will provide additional information on how to start your disability claim with the Veteran Affairs for those with service-connected disabilities that may qualify for compensation. Separating/retiring military personnel must schedule a Capstone Orientation with a Transition Counselor at the Airman & Family Readiness Center as this will be the member’s final appointment with the TAP team to complete DD Form 2648. Members must bring their Career Readiness Standard (CRS) deliverables to the appointment, as the Transition Counselor will verify and ensure that the member has a viable plan prior to transitioning into the civilian sector. All eligible services members shall show documented evidence of meeting the following (documentation must be completed within the last 12 months):
- Completed Individual Transition Plan (ITP)- ITP will document individual personal employment, higher education, career technical training, and/or entrepreneurship goals, actions, and milestones
- Completed 12-month Post-Separation Budget-Consider current and projected income, monthly bills and accumulated debt
- Enrollment/Registration for an eBenefits online account
- Completed Continuum of Military Service Opportunity Counseling (Active Duty Online)-Briefing from In-Service Reserve/Guard Recruiters
- Evaluated transferability of military skills to the civilian workforce and completed a GAP Analysis
- Identified requirements and eligibility for certification, licensure, and apprenticeship in the desire potential career field
- Completed an Individual Assessment Tool to determine personal interests that will enable informed decision making regarding career selection
- Received a DOL Gold Card Certification for DOL American Job Centers
- Completed a Job Application Package or Received a Job Offer Letter. Package must include a private or public sector resume, personal and professional references, and at least two submitted job applications.
*These CRS are in addition to the CRS previously listed if your plan is to pursue Higher Education*
- Completed an Individual Assessment Tool-Assesses aptitudes, interests, strengths, or skills to assist member to make decisions about selecting higher education and career technical training toward a desired future career field
- Completed comparison of higher education or career technical training institution options
- Completed application or received acceptance letter from a higher education or career technical training institution
- Confirmed one-on-one counseling with higher education or career technical training institution advisor via telephone, e-mail, or letter
The Capstone eform DD Form 2648 must be signed by the member and the Transition Counselor as well as the member’s squadron Commander to verify and approve that all TAP congressional mandates were complete and that the Career Readiness Standards were met prior to the member’s final out-processing appointment
Offered by the Tricare Regional Managers, military personnel who are retiring from Active Duty or those continuing their service through the Reserve or Guard components will learn about eligibility and beneficiary categories, program options and enrollment processes, pharmacy, dental and vision options, behavioral/mental health services, other healthcare options and more.
Offered by the Installation Education Office, Service members pursuing college education will receive guidance to prepare for the college application process. The Education Track addresses topics such as identifying one’s educational goals, education funding, and researching and comparing institutions. Upon completion, service members will be prepared to submit an application to an academic institution, schedule a session with a counselor from the institution and connect with a Student Veterans Organization on campus as well as meet with a counselor for individualized preparation.
Offered by the Department of Labor, Service members pursuing further technical training will receive guidance and help in selecting schools and technical fields. The Career Exploration & Planning Track will address topics such as selection of reputable career and technical training school, application processes, how to certification finder web tools and other pertinent internet resources that identify licensed occupations, and a military occupational code translator. Upon completion, members will be able to submit applications to technical training institutes/schools/programs, schedule sessions with a program counselor, and connect with Student Veteran Organizations at that particular vicinity for one-on-one assistance.
Offered by the U.S Small Business Administrations (SBA), Service members pursuing self-employment in the private or non-profit sector will learn about the challenges faced by entrepreneurs, the benefits and realities of entrepreneurship, and the steps toward business ownership. Upon completion, service members will have developed the initial components of their business plan. Afterwards, members will have the option of competing an eight-week online course and will be connected with small business owners through the Veteran Mentor Protégé Program.
In an effort to ease the burden of PCSing/PCAing, the Air Force is reimbursing up to $500 for Airmen’s spouses’ occupational state re-licensing and re-certification costs incurred due to a qualifying PCS/PCA. Workforce development program that provides up to $4,000 of tuition assistance to eligible military spouses to pursue licenses, certificates, certifications, or associate degrees in high demand, portable career fields. Eligibility requirements are as follows, Spouses of Active Duty Members pay grades of E1-E5, W1-W2, and O1-O2, who have successfully completed high school and spouses of National Guard and Reserve of the same pay grades are eligible as well
The Air Force Aid Society in partnership with the Airman & Family Readiness Center provides Spouse Employment Training, on an annual basis, to five spouses stationed at Schriever AFB. The grant program seeks to address the employment challenges Air Force spouses face when PCSing. These grants will provide spouses with an opportunity to obtain training to assist in the pursuit of a mobile career. Information and applications are made available in late March as applicants are chosen in May. **Transitioning service members and spouses search for employment opportunities have the option of being placed on our employment roster to receive email blasts for both state and national job postings as well as upcoming job fairs and hiring events for the local area**
The Air Force Wounded Warrior Program (AFW2) is a congressionally mandated and federally funded program that provides personalized care, services and advocacy to total force seriously wounded, ill and injured Recovering Service Members (RSMs). This program focuses on specific personal and family needs through personalized support and advocacy. AFW2 support includes Recovery Coordination Program, Family Liaison Officer Program (FLO), Caregiver Support Program, and Special Compensation for Assistance with Activities of Daily Living (SCAADL) Program, Emergency Family Member Travel Program (EFMT), Adaptive & Rehabilitative Sports Program, Recovering Airman Mentorship Program (RAMP), and Career Readiness Programs
Active Duty members who have been:
Identified as SI/VSI on a Casualty Morning Report or by a Medical Authority, Airmen with highly complex medical conditions as provided by a Medical Authority, Medical diagnosis of PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), or MST
Air Reserve Components (ARC) who are:
Retained for more than 6 months on Title 10 medical orders (Serious/Severe Conditions),
Returned to Title 10 orders for deployment related condition(s) (Serious/Severe Conditions)
**Those eligible for AFW2 will be connected with a local Recovery Care Coordinator**
Air Force Families Forever (AFFF)
AFFF ensures family members of deceased Airmen are provided with immediate and long-term bereavement care, service, and support. The program serves as a conduit to facilitate the resolution of issues family members may have as it relates to the death of an Airman, in coordination with applicable subject matter experts. This is a long-term aftercare program intended to provide individualized, local support to surviving family members of deceased Airmen. Through phased and timely outreach, survivors will be contacted directly by a Community Readiness Consultant (CRC) or Community Readiness Specialist (CRS) who will provide assistance and support.
Our philosophy is: “Once a part of the Air Force family, always a part of the Air Force family.”
Gold Star Families (GSF)
Gold Star families are survivors of military service members who lost their lives during armed hostilities, including deployments in support of military operations against an enemy and/or during an international terrorist attack. The Air Force’s Gold Star program provides enhanced support and outreach for the lifetime of each survivor, or until the survivor no longer needs or desires the services. The program is designed to let families know the Air Force cares for them and will continue to embrace them as part of the Air Force family. Installation Voting Assistance Office (IVAO)
Under the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA), IVAO’s and Unit Voting Assistant Officers (UVAO’s) will support absentee voting rights to service members, their eligible family members and overseas citizens through individual assistance and outreach
Federal Post Card Application (FPCA)
The FPCA is a form for UOCAVA citizens to simultaneously register to vote and request an absentee ballot. The FPCA will also update the individuals contact information.
Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot (FWAB)
The FWAB is an emergency backup ballot for UOCAVA citizens who did not receive an absentee ballot from their State in a timely manner to participate in the election
